Holy Mitsuwa, Hadley!

Lately I've been wanting to eat nothing but Asian soups. I realize that's vague, but my tastes really have wandered from Thom Yum to Pho to Miso. Going in search of the necessary ingredients for these soups (lemongrass, Thai chilis, or soba noodles, for instance) has brought me to some fascinating discoveries.

Discovery #1: Bento boxes. Man, did you ever think lunch could be this cute?

If you're interested in finding Bento paraphernalia on the cheap, go visit Ichiban Kan. It's a wonderland of two dollar lunch box related cuteness.

Discovery #2: Mitsuwa. This place has everything; it's a wonderland of all things Japanese. It even has a food court with displays using that awesome replica food that's all over Tokyo.

In addition, the produce is awesome:

They have all my favorite Japanese candy:

And they have these sweet bean steamed buns that are, like, the most satisfying thing ever.

Discovery #3: Konnyaku.

I still find this stuff intimidatingly strange, but there's something about the color and consistency that fascinates me. I'll make a dish and report back. Do any of you have recipe suggestions?

Yum! Are the sweet bean treats called Daifuku? I saw a recent (and beautifully photographed) post on VeganYumYum with instructions on how to make daifuku. It looks really tasty, but I've never tried it. (Here's the link: http://veganyumyum.com/2009/03/daifuku/)

I'm jealous of your stash! We should totally set up a treat swap on one of our blogs! At this point in the semester, I need all the sugary help I can get!

A swap sounds AWESOME! We should totally get that together.

I'm heading off to look at Daifuku...

I love Mitsuwa! We shop there all the time. Get some soup base and the frozen veggie mix with the lotus roots, etc. For some great soups. How about some furikake (rice seasoning)? Experiment with making your own onigiri, rice ball snacks, actually they are more like triangles and you can fill them with a little fresh fish or umiboshi or grill them...yummy! Check out Dasio Discount stores also for their great bentos. That is where i get all of PINTs bento supplies. I'll stop talking now :). Happy Cooking!

I can get lost in Japanese supermarkets, so much strange yet delicious stuff!
I'm a big fan of miso soup, too.

Hi, I just got to your blog from getcrafty.com and randomly picked your blog from the blog list. Imagine how shocked I was when I saw your post on Mitsuwa! Love the place and get there about once a month. I also love those little mushrooms. I agree that some of the stuff is too fascinating to pass up. Nice meeting you!
